(HOD)
The name of the University is Evangel University and has the Assemblies of God Nigeria as its proprietor. Evangel is derived from the word “evangelic” which means good news or gospel. To the Proprietors, -education and its spreading is good news. It is good news to hear that ignorance and darkness are banished through education. It is good news when the man is liberated and freed to perform to his optimum, when man is equipped to maximize his potentials. Man is said to be the “light of the world”. This is only possible through qualitative education that produces God-fearing graduates. God, the Creator of man, enjoined him to “go and subdue the earth” and all that is in it. That, in effect means that, man must have mastery over himself, his total self: spirit, soul and body. Evangel University is out to enlighten men and women on the path of righteousness and quality education; this is “Evangelic”.
The history of Evangel University dates back to early 2000’s when the retired General Superintendent, Rev. Dr. Charles O. Osueke saw the need to build a University that would not only complement Government’s efforts in educating the teeming qualified youths, but also produce qualitative God- fearing graduates that would turn around the fortunes of our country. He shared his dream with members of the Executive Committee, the highest administrative body of Assemblies of God Church. The idea was accepted, more so with the increasing demand by Nigerians for a restructuring of our tertiary institutions; so as to make them more productive and God fearing. The General Superintendent was directed to establish an ad-hoc committee to come up with a feasible proposal. Evangel University was granted approval by the Federal Government of Nigeria on February 28, 2012, and took off on November 17 of same year. The University take-off site is located at Okpoto, a sprawling town in Ebonyi State. It is approximately 48km from Enugu, capital of Enugu State, 24km from Abakaliki, the capital of Ebonyi State. Okpoto is a gateway from Enugu state to Ebonyi, Cross River and Benue States respectively. The University permanent site is located at Akaeze in Ebonyi State; this location is along the Okigwe-Afikpo Expressway, with 302 hectares of land for the University. It enjoys a massive community support, friendly climate, and topography. The history of the department of Microbiology first started in 2012 and offers a four (4) year B.Sc. honours degree programme. It also caters for the training of staff (staff development). Studying Microbiology at Evangel University, offers graduate education that is internationally recognised and respected. Tuition and living costs are also affordable, with no compromise whatsoever to academic quality or lifestyle; Career opportunities for the microbiologist abound in the educational (academic and research institutions), health (medical, veterinary and pharmaceutical), industry (food, pharmaceutical, agricultural, and petroleum) and environmental (aquatic and waste management and control).
